Question : My son is currently in an RTC program. He is 31 years old and suffers from psychosis/schizophrenia. He has been in two other RTC programs where he was given only one medication (Zyprexa) and recovered fully within 3 mos. The RTC program he is currently in has him on the following medications:
zyprexa, 5mg morning dosing
zyprexa, 20mg evening dosing
Prolixin, 1.5 mg, twice per day
Depakote, 500mg, twice per day
Cogentin, 1.5 mg, twice per day
Concerta, 36mg morning dosing
Ativan, 1mg, twice per day
His interim Diagnostic Opinions:
Axis I Schizoaffective Disorder [295.70]
Axis II Diagnosis Deferred [V71.09]
My son was diagnosed with Schizophrenia 10 years ago and only has had misdemeanor charges. We feel he is on too many meds. Thank you for any insight

Brief Answer:
drug regime needs to be modfied.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns for your son.

I have read the details given by you.

In my opinion, modifications in drug regime in needed from the drugs which you have listed:

Zyprexa- to be continued as it is.

Prolixin- Contains fluphenazine. It is another antipsychotic drug. Not needed.

Depakote- Contains divalproex. Its a mood stabiliser. usually indicated in bipolar disorder. Not needed.

Cogentin- Conatin trihexyphenidyl. Its a central anticholinergic. Given to prevent extra-pyramidal side effects of antipsychotics. to be continued if there are such side-effects from zyprexa.

Ativan- Contains lorazepam. Given for insomnia and anxiety. Can be given on SOS basis.

The more the number of drugs given, the more are side-effects.

Kndly discuss this with your doctor.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.
