Suggest Treatment For Rectal Bleeding And Diarrhea

Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: Hi, I'm a 20 year old female with 4-5 years history of rectal bleeding (on toilet paper), chronic constipation, occasional diarrhea, and frequent abdominal pain/cramping (often triggered by acidic foods). Recently this past year (2016), the rectal bleeding has become worse in frequency and color (once even appearing in the stool for the first time) and I've also begun to develop severe bloating alternating with the frequent abdominal pain. I also lost at least 10 lbs this year, including 5 lbs in the last few months. I am scheduled to have an endoscopy+colonoscopy in 2 days for my ongoing symptoms but I'm honestly a little more than worried about what to expect. A few doctors said statistically it shouldn't be anything too bad at my age, but why the worsening symptoms these last past two semesters in college? Could it be stress-related? Thanks?

Brief Answer:
It can be due to Inflammatory bowel disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.

Bleeding Per rectum associated with constipation may be due to hemorrhoids, anal fissure, or polyp at your age. But as you said hemorrhoid is out. It can be Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which can explain all other symptoms you have especially weight loss and abdominal pain also. So by undergoing colonoscopy will be best test to diagnose it correctly which have been scheduled also. So need not worry as all these disease are treatable.

Bleeding can not be stress related. However stress may aggravate bleeding if underlying disease is there.

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you . Wish you a good health
