Suggest Treatment For Restricted Movement And Pain In The Shoulder Post Injury

Posted on Tue, 20 Dec 2016
Question: I took a little tumble while jogging three nights ago, damaging my shoulder while bracing the fall. I can not lift the damaged arm in a forward direction and I think that I may have partially torn my rotator cuff. Other than when sleeping, it does not really bother me unless I try to lift the damaged arm, which I can't accomplish without using my other arm for the lift to shoulder height. If the damaged arm is supported externally at shoulder height or above, I can use it. Will a tincture of time help, or do I need surgery to regain function?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

It's possible that you may have torn your Rotator cuff especially if you can't lift your arm by the side to the level above your head.

Apply ice, keep the limb elevated. Get an Xray and MRI scan of the affected shoulder to look for fractures and Rotator cuff tear respectively. Till these investigations are done we can't conclude what it is.

Avoid lifting the arm. Keep it in a shoulder-arm pouch or shoulder immobiliser. Perform elbow and wrist with finger movements. Pendulum shoulder movements can be done in 5 days. Get the investigations done and please upload them for my review.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
