Suggest Treatment For Runny Nose In A 1 Year Old
Question: Hi Doctor,
My 1 year old daughter is suffering from runny nose from today morning and she is not able to sleep at all. however she has taken some solid, soup and breast feeding.
But she is not allowing us to use the mucus sucker and due to runny nose her nose is blocked and sometimes mucus is streaming from her nostrils. She is not able to lie down even for a minute and crying.
I have given 1 dose of T-mimic and Ambrodil (5ml each) 30 mints back but no luck till now. We are also giving Nesoclear but that is not helping as she is already having runny nose..
Do we need to take her to the hospital and give nebulizer? i am not able to understand how to make her sleep and give some relief

Brief Answer:
Try nasal decongestants
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing .
Running nose with secretions is usually a viral infection.
It may take a few days to settle.
You are correct in giving the medicines currently administered.
What you can try is nasal decongestants like nasivion XXXXXXX drops.
I usually prescribe around one drop three times a day.
If that doesn't help then you may have to take her to hospital for nebulisation.
Mucus sucker can be tried during her sleep when she may allow to use it.
Don't worry.
She will settle down soon. Continue tminic and ambrodil.
Wishing your child good health and speedy recovery.

Dr Arun

Hello doctor,
many thanks for your reply.
just wanted to know that after 4 days now my daughters nose is stuffy as the mucus is now clotted. As i did not find nasivion i am giving my baby nesoclear saline drops 3-4 times a day (3 drops on each side). but this is not of much help as the mucus is clotted and she cant breath well at night while lying down.
How many times can I give her Nasoclear in a day and what is the dosage?
Can i give her Otrinoz-Pediatric (0.05% Xylometazoline) Nasal drops.
in the medicine it is written that it can be given to children of 2 years and above... My baby's weight is 16 kg. Is the medicine suitable for her?And if i give her Otrinoz-Pediatric (0.05% Xylometazoline) Nasal drops what will be the doses?
We are giving her vapour with Carbol Plus drops in it. Is it safe?
Is T Mimic and Ambrodil making her mucus clot? Should we give her some other medicine?
Please suggest.
many thanks for your reply.

Brief Answer:
yes you can one drop
Detailed Answer:
Hi
If you are not finding nasivion XXXXXXX you can give otrinoz pediatric nasal drops. Even if it is mentioned as above 2 years, in the current situation you can use it.
It is better to administer only one drop in each nostril, maximum three-time a day. Use only for three days.
You can stop tminic it might make mucous to clot.
Continue ambrodil.
Vapour with careola plus can be used safely.
Nasoclear can be given any number of times usually I advice four times a day.
Wishing your child good health and speedy recovery.

Thanks doctor for your advice.
I have also visited a general pediatrician locally just to check if my daughters chest is clear. Doctor confirmed that her chest is clear.
However instead of T-mimic doctor suggested Maxtra and asked me to stop Ambrodil as there is not cough symptom.
I am attaching the prescription for you review and final advice.
Many thanks
