Question: I have had a runny nose, a slightly sore throat, medium congestion, and a recurrent cough since last Wednesday evening when I disembarked from a transatlantic flight from London, but no/no fever. I have been taking OTC Mucinex Fast-Max for "severe congestion and cough" containing Destromethorphan HBr, Guaifenesin, and Phenylephrine. I also routinely take prescription medications for hypertension. I have also been experiencing intermittent relatively mild discomfort/dull pain at the base of my skull in the back of my head.

I have gone through your query. Avoid phenylephrine containing drugs. For those who are having hypertension by taking preparations containing phenylephrine can cause shooting up of blood pressure. Even it can cause increased risk of stroke. Pain ant back of head is most likely due to this.

Is your cough productive with sputum?
If yes what is colour of sputum?
Do you have breathlessness?

You can take antihistamines like cetirizine (Zyrtec) , acetaminophen or advil, Mucinex expectorant. Take tea with lemon and honey , warm chicken soup with pepper.
If there is no improvement then antibiotics will be required. I would suggest antibiotics like Co-amoxiclav in such case. This is a prescription antibiotic given in dosage of 625mg twice daily for 1 week.
