Suggest Treatment For Sciatic Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Oct 2017
Question: My mom has a herniated disk and sciatica. Her pain was getting worse. Her pain management doctor was giving her lumbar shots, but they ended up not helping anymore. She became weaker and weaker and I couldn't take care of her anymore because it became dangerous for her and me. A visiting nurse and a social worker came to evaluate her. They suggested inpatient physical therapy. She needed to be hospitalized for at least 3 days first because of medicare. She has been in the ICU for over a week and a half. My family doctor who specializes in ear, nose, and thought, is such a kind man and stops by to see her every morning. From what she told me, in the ICU she hasn't been assigned to a particular doctor. So here's my questions.
1. Is it normal at this point to not be assigned to a particular doctor?
2. If so, who would be deciding on the tests that are given?
3. I am totally out of the loop because no one updates me (I visit everyday) on her condition and what is keeping her from being released. I don't want to be a pain, and my brother says just ride it out. Don't ask questions. But as you know, hospital stays are very expensive.
What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Need a specialist doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through the medical history in detail.

I agree with you totally that she should have been assigned to a particular by now.She should have been under supervision of a neurosurgeon or an orthopedist.

These doctors are specialised in treating patients of sciatica and herniated disc. They will advice MRI ,Electromyography,Nerve conduction studies as and when required.

I feel that you should be updated daily by the hospital doctors about her health. If you have any doubts, you should have a face to face conversation with the incharge doctor who is responsible for her treatment.

If she is hemodynamically stable, then i see no reason for her to be admitted inside an ICU.She can be taken care of in a room/ward as well so that you can save on your expenses.

If possible, get the reports and try uploading them here so that i can guide you better.Or atleast take a second opinion from another doctor / hospital.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.
