Question: I have been suffering from a back pain in my upper back for a long time. It had been completely cured for the past two months. However, during this weekend I pulled a back muscle, and now the pain has spread in the same region while I am working in office. Please suggest what should I do?

Brief Answer:
TAKE MUSCLE RELAXANTS

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

It seems that either your back muscles are weak due to prolonged office hours or there might be a nerve compression in the spine.

If the symptoms are recurring at regular intervals, then you should start yoga and stretching exercises daily. If time permits, you can start a gym for atleast 45 min per day.

As far as the present pain is concerned, you can start on anti inflammatory analgesics like ibuprofen or aceclofenac along with muscle relaxants (thiocolchicoside, tizanidine or chlorzoxazone).

Application of local analgesic gel followed by hot fomentation will help.

If this does not help, then you can consult a orthopedist and if necesssary, get an MRI done to rule out nerve compression in the spine.

I hope the answer was useful to you.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Wish you a speedy recovery.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for your immediate response.

Are their any particular symptoms for a pinched nerve? it actually sounds pretty scary.
Also, if you have any links that you could share as to what kind of yoga should I perform to relieve the pain it would be great.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hi, a pinched nerve will cause radiating pain in the back or upper limbs, which may or may not be associated with tingling and numbness.

But you should not worry as it is just another possibility.

You can follow this link address for yoga exercises-

Among yoga, Padmasadhna and cat stretch pose are also helpful. You can find them on youtube.

These exercises should be performed for 15-30 minutes in total ,every morning ,empty stomach.

Thank you.
