Suggest Treatment For Severe Body Pain And Fatigue In An Elderly Person
Question: My husband is 73 years old. He started out with aches and pains all over his body. This was a week ago today. Sunday he still had the aches and pains. Sunday night he had a fever of 102 and had chills. Monday morning he woke up and trouble with his balance and was confused. Monday night we took him to the ER. They did a chest xray, urinalysis, ECG, blood work. While he was there they gave him IV fluids. The Dr. told us that he an acute UTI. His temp was 103.1 when they took his temp. They gave him Cipro. When we left the ER he was almost back to normal. He walked out the door and to the car with no problem. When he woke up on Tuesday morning all the symptoms returned including the fever. He has been taking Tylenol. Things have not gotten better. He has gone one day without a fever. His body still aches and burns.went back to the ER only to be told that the final result of the urine culture showed no UTI. So he is not taking the Cipro any longer. Today he is shaking and weak; can hardly stand up; and his body is aching and burning. His temp is 100.5. He is a Type 2 diabetic. This time in the ER they told us it was fatigue. Any ideas?

You need to go back to the same ER and let me know your concerns. It was clearly not a UTI, but there are many different infections and disease that could be causing this. Everything from dehydration to meningitis. He need additional routing screening blood work with another urinalysis and more CT scans and X-rays. It is not an easy diagnosis to make. Symptoms like these are usually begging but occasionally they can have long term consequences. There is not Much you can do at home other then taking Tylenol and encouraging him to continue drinking fluids and eating health. If there is an underlying infection, then he needs treatment. It sounds like he got better with IV fluid and he might need more of them.
