Question: Hello… I have been waking up with pain that I identify as pleurisy that seems to be around my right lung…it is much worse in the morning after lying on my back all night…it is not acute but is uncomfortable and I would like to clear it up sooner rather than later… I am not particularly short of breath at all… Any thoughts?

Chest pain or back discomfort which is pleuritic in nature has to occur in association with taking a deep breath.

The chest needs to be auscultated for evidence of a pleural rub. An ultrasound of the chest can be advised to look for normal pleura and diaphragmatic movements during breathing. It can also detect any pleural effusion, if present. A chest x ray can also be advised to look for other causes that may present with these symptoms. Treatment would depend on the cause.
