Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation
Question: what is a bowel obstruction? please explain in full detail what they do to resolve the problem.
Brief Answer:
Emergency evaluation and surgery.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in HCM.
Bowel obstruction is a complex lesion wherein the lumen is obstructed and this prevents forward propulsion of the contents. There are many causes ranging from hernia to malignancy. As a result there is accumulation of the gas , liquids , food etc proximal to the obstruction (ie before the site of obstruction). This leads to pain , distention of the belly and inability to pass stools and gas. This is a life threatening emergency and needs admission to hospital , investigation to find the cause and in many cases surgical intervention.
I hope this answers your doubt.
Regards

The doctor said that I had it in the hospital and that he would not do emergency surgery to fix it, why would he have told me that I have that and then not fix it until three weeks from now? Makes no sense
Brief Answer:
Cause determines the nature of treatment.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the feedback.
It depends upon the cause and severity of presentation. A radiological work up will reveal the possible cause of the obstruction. If it is a partial obstruction or a obstruction cause by sluggish bowel movements or constipation then a conservative approach is acceptable. As I said everything depends upon the cause.
