Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough And Constant Phlegm In The Throat

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Apr 2017
Question: I have a cough that emanates from just behind my Sternal Notch. A small amount of mucus accumulates there and 'flickers' and causes an automatic cough. Often the phlegm subsides as I cough (severely) and it returns minutes later and triggers the cough again. Is the phlegm coming from my sinuses or is it being produced in my trachea or Esophagus? How can I get rid of the annoying phlegm? I had the flue about 4 weeks ago and it hung on for about two weeks but the cough won't go away.

Brief Answer:
Please consult your doctor for some tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking in HCM.

I have gone through your concern and i am going to give some more information for you.

According to the history you have had a flu before 4 weeks and you don't have any other chronic lung diseases .

Usually in viral situations the cough can last for up to one month but improves with time.

Chronic sinusitis or GERD (stomach problems ) can cause a chronic cough too.

In your case i would recommend you to do some tests as follows :
CRP
Chest X Ray
Spirometry test
ECG

If they are negative we rule out lung diseases.
Meanwhile you can use antiacid medications (like Omez twice per day) ,mucolitics, drink a lot of water, and inhalers with corticosteroids for some days.
You will feel better again.
Please consult with your doctor and h/se knows very well the above test.

Take care

What relation do these tests have to my cough and what are they expected to diagnose?

What is a Spirometry test? i'm not familiar with that one.

You forgot to answer my question regarding where the phlegm behind my sternum is coming from: Sinuses, Trachea or esophagus?

Brief Answer:
We have to rule out bacterial inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Blood test CRP,indicates specifically bacterial inflammation .
Chest X Ray shows more precise for lung diseases.
Spirometry test evaluate the lung condition if it is present a bronchoconstriction of the airways which needs treatment.
The first and common place where the phlegm might come from is trachea which means the airways.
This is the reason i recommended the tests. If chest x Ray and spirometry are normal the lungs are excluded.
For sinusitis it is needed an X ray of the sinuses to evaluate sinuses.
For stomach refluxes you can do a fibrogastroscopy firstly to diagnose it.

Best wishes
