Suggest Treatment For Severe Cramps During Periods In A Teenager

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: My daughter, who is 15, complains of heavy flow and cramps on the 5th and/or 6th day of her period. This follows some days where her flow is light. I know teens can have more painful/heavier cramps, but this seems excessive. She often uses this to avoid school/appointments, etc., so I really need to know if it is possibly true. Any suggestions for relief would also be helpful, although I think we are aware of most remedies. Thank you. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Treatment suggested.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thank you for writing to us with your health concern.
Yes, teenage is the time, when the menstrual cycle has not yet stabilized, so teens can have heavy and erratic cycles.
You need to confirm this objectively, if you can, by asking about the number of Maxi pads or tampons that she is soaking through.
If she is soaking one every 2 hours or so, yes it is indeed a heavy cycle.
Pain and cramps , unfortunately, cannot be assessed by another person, so you have to take her word for it.
Remedies , or course, are there.
She can be taking a combination of Mefenamic acid and Tranexamic acid ( Trapic MF, Tranexa - MF are some brands, check out the ones available at your end ).
1 tablet twice a day on the difficult days should suffice.
Please discuss with your gynecologist before starting this therapy.
A hot water bottle in bed also helps, but if she is malingering / feigning this, it would be a way out of school / appointments , so leave that as a last resort.
Hope this information helps.
All the best

This is not a follow-up question, just a reply. I appreciate this information. I will find out the number of pads/tampons she is going through, and if it is truly heavy, I will take her to the doctor. I didn't know there was really anything else that could be done aside from OTC measures.
