Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea And Wollen Redness Around Navel

Question: My son is 2 yo. Hes had very bad diareha since Friday 2-3 times a day, VERY foul smelling, watery, XXXXXXX color. So much at a time that his diaper cant absorb it fast enough. Now the skin around his belly button is quite red, and the center of it is bright white and starting to become swollen. Treating him as if he has stomach flu, electrolytes, chewable pepto, light diet, not getting better
Brief Answer:
It may take 4-5 days for stool pattern to get normal
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query
The most common cause of diarrhea in this age is due to viral infection but it may be due to bacteria and amoeba also. The main aim of diarrhea management is to prevent dehydration by supplementing plenty of fluids. But if there is persistent fever, stool contains mucus, baby is getting lethargic, oral accepatance is poor and urinary frequency has decreased it should be taken seriously.
What you mentioned redness around umbilicus with progressive swelling can be due to bacterial infection of intestine or peritonitis. In this condition also there can be loose stools.
I would like to get a stool and blood test done in view of redness around umbilicus to rule out bacterial infection.Continue giving pedialyte along with liet diet.Avoid junk food, milk, sweeteners, carbonated drink.
Adding probiotic (helps in mainataining normal gut flora lost in diarrhea)and zinc(helps in normalisation of inner layer of intestine) helps in early recovery.I would suggest you to get him clinically examined by a pediatrician and also discuss about the possibility of bacterial infection.
I shall be glad to answer if you have any more query
Wish your child speedy recovery
Regards
