Suggest Treatment For Severe Dry Cough Caused By Stomach Reflux

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: I have severe dry coughing sessions caused by stomach reflux. I have learned to regurgitate this clear liquid which relieves the cough but the sessions soon start all over again. It is worse when trying to sleep. The reflux is never acidic - just a lot of clear liquid. Common antacid prescriptions have not reduced the symptoms. Would you have any suggestions that may relieve or cure this horrible condition? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
prokinetics

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

For reflux disease you have to take a prokinetic along with the antacid.

Prokinetics propel the food from the stomach into the intestines and empty the stomach quickly thereby reducing the chances of reflux. Please talk to your physician about it.

Raise the head end of the bed by 2 inches by placing a XXXXXXX under the head end of the bed. This will reduce the reflux when you sleep.

Breathing exercises also help to improve the tone of the sphincter in the food pipe, thereby reducing reflux.

If you have been suffering from a long time then you will need to undergo an Upper GI endoscopy to rule out H Pylori infection and hiatus hernia. Hiatus hernias cause reflux.

Thank you very much Doctor Rajkishori:
I underwent an Upper Gi endoscopy two years ago because I was complaining about the severe reflux condition and they told me that I had a minor Hiatus hernia but they felt it was not the source of my problem. I have been suspecting something in the upper track was collecting this fluid which allowed me to expel it (regurgitate) and in turn relieve the coughing. Is it possible that it is collecting where the hiatus hernia is located and, if so, can the Hernia be repaired? Thank you indeed for your answer. Because of your answer I have learned more about my problem than I have from doctor visits.

Brief Answer:
get another endosocopy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Minor hiatus may be asymptomatic. However if the problem persists, it would be worthwhile to repeat endoscopy. Further since it was done 2 years ago, latest endoscopy will help us understand new changes if any.

Hiatus hernia can be managed both conservatively with medicines or through surgical means. The decision can be taken after latest endoscopy results.
