Suggest Treatment For Severe Fever In A Child

Question: Dear Dr ,

My 21 month old boy recently a fever and we went to a GP. He had some viral infection and medication was prescribe. Fever went down and all was well.
However I also noticed tat his gums were swollen . What could be the cause? I had attached pictures for u to see.The gums are swelling up covering part of his teeth

Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
I have seen the attached picture.
Based on the historyand image it could be result of viral infection like herpes or other viruses.
It could be related to teething too.
If there is no pain , no need to treat as it will settle in a week or so.
However I suggest you to consult a dentist to get her thoroughly examined .
If your child has pain, you can try ibuprofen which I prescribe for such kids in my clinic.
If fever recurs you need to consult with your doctor to rule out abscess developing in the tooth and gums, which can cause persistent fever.
