Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms xxxxxxxxxx,
Thank you for writing in to healthcaremagic.com with your concern.
I have read your questions carefully and have studied the attached pictures.
The hives/rash and the itching is due to an allergic reaction.
Since you do have a history of allergy to poison ivy, it is quite possible that you are allergic to something else as well. New allergies can develop too.
It could be something you ate, or it could be the pollen or dust and mites or wool.
You need to carefully avoid any such new thing that you might have developed allergy to.
But your present symptoms are worrisome because you still have severe itching and hives in spite of taking Prednisone 40 mg and Benadryl in the morning.
In my opinion, the best thing to do would be, to go to the ER and get yourself properly evaluated to make sure you are not developing any serious reactions.
You can continue to take prednisone in 3 divided doses (10 mg per dose), and Benadryl 3 times a day and apply Calamine lotion over the itchy areas.
You must avoid repeat exposure to the allergen at all costs.
Vacuum your bed sheets and blankets and bed, mats and carpets, avoid woolen clothes and avoid any foods that you possibly are allergic to.
Please go to the ER or if you can consult our PCP urgently, do go and see her/him.
You need to be careful about prednisone, if you are diabetic or if you have hypertension, prednisone can make both worse.
Please consult your doctor or go to the ER.
I hope this answers your concerns, please feel free to write back to me if you have additional queries or doubts.
Wishing you speedy recovery.
Best wishes
