Question: Hi. I've been having pretty severe neck pain, with swelling and tenderness on the left side of my neck, down through the left shoulder muscles. I have a history of arthritis throughout the spine and degeneration. This started about 2 weeks ago. I saw a P.A., and they thought I had Shingles, and gave medication for that, which did nothing. What does it sound like to you? YYYY@YYYY

A sudden severe neck pain that you have can be due to a muscle spasm or a nerve compression caused by cervical spondylosis. An MRI scan of neck can help in proper diagnosis. In addition to pain killers and oral muscle relaxants medicines like gabapentin can help.
