Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain From Gout When Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia
Question: Hello. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 4 years ago and have been doing my best with diet, exercise and vitamins to alleviate pain and discomforts. Just this week I have been diagnosed has having gout due to the sudden and excruiating pain brought on overnight. I was prescribed a 6-day regiment of steriods of which I am now on the third day. However, my pain is just as excruitating as before and I'm not sure what results I should be expecting from the steriods if the pain has not yet subsided at all by now. Question?: Could fibromyalgia have brought on the gout? I've been reading-up on gout but none of the causes seem to fit me (51 yr. old AA female, never pregnant, etc.)
Brief Answer:
Not likely.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.
It is unlikely and without a logic that Fibromyalgia could have caused the Gout.Gout must be a separate pathology in your case.
Probably, you are dealing with two distinct diseases,at a time.
Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review.

I understand and appreciate your response. I do not like taking prescribed medications for long periods and have been managing the fibro without them. Because the Gout issue is different, will I be required to be on long-term medication to get rid of it or at least keep it away for long terms? I can't stand having this pain associated with gout, especially since I have finally found a healthy regiment to control the all over pain due to fibromyalgia. Bottom line, I just don't want to any prescriptions that can have side-effects that may lead to more prescriptions. I've done so well so far and this recent disease has thrown a wrench in my XXXXXXX life.
Brief Answer:
Diet and lifestyle measures.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.
Acute gouty attacks can be treated with medicines for a few days.
For long term, dietary and lifestyle modifications can be tried first like-
control of body weight
low-purine diet
increased liquid intake
limitation of alcohol use
avoidance of diuretics
decreased use of fructose containing beverages and foods
If these measures fail to manage hyperuricemia, then drug therapy has to be started, which is usually given for life-long.
Please discuss with your treating physician accordingly.
