Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Back And Near The Shoulders

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Nov 2016
Question: I am experiencing sudden pain in my back near my right shoulder. It is radiating up to the right side of my neck, and my right arm feels strange. I cannot turn my neck very far to the right or upwards without experiencing pain in my back/shoulder. The pain was so sudden and severe that I had to find a new position laying down on the floor, which was also painful. I am a 23 year old male. I want to rule out meningitis/know if I should go to an emergency room or just take Tylenol. This incident came out of nowhere and I have never experienced this before.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are not suggestive of meningitis.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on that, the most likely diagnosis is a pinched nerve in the neck, which is most often due to slipped disc. Symptoms are not suggestive of meningitis.

You can take tylenol. There is no need to rush to emergency room. If pain persists, you may see your doctor.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Thank you.

What is the treatment for a pinched nerve due to slipped disc? Is it safe for me to continue to workout? (cardio and light weights)

And finally, what are potential causes of the slipped disc?

I will visit a doctor if the pain persists.

Brief Answer:
Physiotherapy helps in most cases of slipped disc.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

For slipped disc, physiotherapy and medications are helpful in most cases. Only in more severe cases, epidural injections or surgery are needed.

Avoid lifting heavy weight, otherwise workouts are fine.

No specific cause is known, however, slipped disc may occur with prolonged sitting, long driving, falls or other trauma.

Best wishes,
