Brief Answer:
Can be an injury or inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A severe pain in the right knee at her age is likely to be due to an injury to the knee or its internal structures or an inflammation of the joint. This is often associated with a local swelling in the area.
A proper diagnosis needs a direct examination and an MRI scan of the knee. She needs to avoid weight bearing on the knee and take rest.
Do take some mild pain killers like Motrin after meals till a proper diagnosis is made. A specific treatment depends on the cause.
I hope this answers your query.
