Suggest Treatment For Severe Swelling And Bruising In The Foot After Injury

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Sep 2017
Question: A table fell on top of my right foot. X-rays showed no breaks. Only a small part of my foot was hit. However almost entire top of foot is bruised and swollen including toes, up to my ankle and really dark down right side of foot. There's a lump abou 1 1/2 inches above my smallest toes. That area is sore if knocked into. I don't have full range of my foot. Attempting to walk is off and uncomfortable There was extreme rapid swelling after Injury. The major swelling has gone down. But, my foot is still abnormally swollen and stayed same size past few days. No shoes fit. The injury happened 4 days ago. I've mostly kept my foot elevated. Is this a ruptured tendon? If so how do I stabilize and for how long? Or is this just a big bruise/swelling from impact?

Brief Answer:
It is soft tissue inury, Plaster is required.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.

In my opinion , due to fall of heavy weight ( table) on your (R) foot , there is a severe injury to sort tissues like skin ,subcutaneous fat , tendons and minor blood vessels. That is what is causing so much of swelling and bruising.

If your x rays are normal and the distal toes are pink in color , then I would give a below knee plaster slab for three weeks. This is to provide rest to your foot while soft tissues are healing. The pain will lessen and with new synthetic material you should be able to walk little.

Along with plaster I would also like to start painkillers .
Thanx for the question. Please feel free to ask any other question.
