Suggest Treatment For Sinus Infection After Exposure To Syphilis

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: After a possible exposure to syphilis (I live in Texas), I happened to be taking clarithromycin for a sinus infection. I was taking 500 mg twice daily for 10 days. I started this about 4 days after possible exposure.
So is clarithromycin effective against this gram negative germ? What do you think?
Or would you like more detailed information?

Brief Answer:
Suggest replacing clarithromycin with azithromycin, both same group

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Thank you so much for that information sir, it shall suffice. Let me first start by listing the medications that are used to treat syphilis, they are:

1. First-line: Penicillins (penicillin G to be more precise)

2. Macrolide group of antibiotics: Azithromycin

Although, clarithromycin also belongs to the same group as azithromycin does, and has a close resemblance in structure and action, I have not seen the use and efficacy of the drug in the use of treating syphilis.

I would propose the following:

-Why don't you start using azithromycin instead of clarithromycin, same dosage as azithromycin will also help to treat the sinus infection and at the same time it can also help to treat the syphilis. This way we can avoid taking chances, don't you think?

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
