Suggest Treatment For Sore And Burning Sensation In Nipple
My daughter is 1 month old . She keeps asking for milk whenever she is awake . I completEly breastfeed her but due to frequent feeding I have got sore nipples and it's burns . I have started expressing milk and giving her twice or thrice in a day using bottle. I wanted to check can I give her outside milk like Formula 1 or Lactogen? Which one is good Formula milk or Lactogen? And what should be the frequency of it in a day.
Also when I express milk early easily I was able to express 70ml and once it came 100ml from one side of the breast . But after that somehow now expressing milk it comes only 50 to 60 ml ...from one side and other side adds up to only 10-15ml?
Has mine lactation reduced? I eat very normal food and drink at least 7 glasses of water ?
Latch her properly,You may give Nan Pro 1 formula
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM
I can understand your concern. Most common cause of sore nipple is improper latching.Proper positioning and latching is must for comfortable breast feeding.
Follow these steps of positioning and latching-
Keep your back well supported.Support whole body of the baby not just neck or shoulder.Keep baby's head and neck in a line without any twisting of neck. Her whole body should turned towards your body touching your abdomen.
Allow the baby to open her mouth wide with most of the part of areola including nipple inside her mouth.
Baby who sucks only nipple not areola does not get enough milk. This makes her frustated and thus vigorous suckling causes injury to the nipple.
Frequent feeds when baby is in early hunger prevents vigorous sucking and thus injury. So frequent feed does not causes injury.
You can continue to feed the baby despite sore nipple with proper latching technique.
You can apply your own milk over the nipple and let it dry.It helps in healing.Application of ice before feed also helps in decreasing the pain.
As much as possible, expose the nipples to the air so they will stay dry and heal;as anything touching sore nipple causes more pain.
You can use nipple shields(looks like bottle nipple and made of very thin silicone) to avoid direct contact.
Painful breast and sore nipple is one of the most common cause of decreased milk production. But you need not to worry as it is temporary and milk production normalizes after healing.
As your milk production has decreased the present amount may not be sufficient to fulfill the hunger. So you may give formula feed.Nan pro 1 formula is good and I don't get any complaint from mothers regarding this formula.Make proper dilution as per instruction and use spoon/bowl to feed the baby. You may give the feeds as per her demands.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.
All the best
Take care,Regards
