Brief Answer:
Muscle strain

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.
Based on your symptoms I believe you have a sprained muscle. This could happen from lifting something heavy, awkward sleeping position, overstretching to reach something, even combing your hair.

I recommend :
-avoid any activity that worsens the pain. (like lifting heavy objects, stirring while cooking, driving, typing)
-any hot compresses to the area (and about 5cms around it) for about 10 minutes.
Then, apply anti inflammatory gels (diclofenac) over the area in gentle circular motion. Do not rub in too hard.
After an hour, apply ice pack (wrapped in a thin cloth) for about 15 minutes (on and off).
Repeat process. 2-3 times a day.
-an ibuprofen twice a day can help relieve inflammation.

Back muscles take time to heal as there is continuous usage, but It should feel better in 3-4days. It will take a week to completely disappear with appropriate therapy.
If not or if you have numbness along your right arm or neck, please see your doctor to check for nerve impingement or disc disease.

Once it feels better, start to do gentle stretches for the upper and middle back. (beach ball hug, for instance).
It would be better to ask your chiropractor to show you how. It should be done slowly and gently an dying should feel the stretch. Hold it for about 5 seconds and then relax slowly.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Hope you feel better.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
