Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Reflux
Question: Hi there, am a fit 34 y/o male, 5"10, 80kg, non-smoker. Just had an endoscopy today to look for cause of persistent minor sore throat and reflux sometimes during exercise. After stopping exercise for a month whilst on holiday my sore throat cleared up and I don't get reflux symptoms very often. My endoscopist said I had a minor sliding hiatus hernia and I have a few questions about this condition, which apparently are very common. 1. Will this get worse over time? 2. I'm very active and enjoy running and endurance racing and also do sit-ups and pressups for strength, will any of these activities make the hernia worse? 3. Are there any exercises that I can do to help control the hernia and ensure it doesn't worsen (assuming these can get worse). Examples being deep breathing, crunches etc. Thanks for your time. Rob. I also have photos available from my endoscopy, please advise if these will assist in replying to my question.
Brief Answer:
Hernia doesnt need any intervention
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through you reports . In response to your queries
1. The hernia is unlikely to get worse over time.
2. You can continue running endurance racing and sit ups they wont cause any change in the hernia
3.There are no exercises which will help to reduce the hernia
Your treatment will be guided by your reflux symptoms.
Endoscopy photos will be helpful. Please upload them for more specific clarifications.
Regards.

Thank you for clarifying this. I have a very good endoscopist but just wanted to double check these questions, a second opinion is always good. I have attached some photos. Unfortunately they are a photo of a photo, I havent received and digital copies yet as I only had the procedure today. Sorry about the low quality, i believe photo 2 shows the hernia and a small erosion. Thanks, XXXXXXX
Brief Answer:
Do Not worry about the hernia
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
The second Photo is a photograph of the fundus of the stomach and not the esophagus, a small erosion can be seen in the fundus. Photo 4 is the photograph of the Gastro esophageal junction. It is difficult to comment on the presence of hiatus hernia based on the Photograph taken. But It tells me that if a hernia is present it is a small one. I would advise you not no worry about it.
Hope this Helps
