What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing?

I seem to be having difficulty swallowing and it feels like I have a muscle that is somehow caught over the esophagus. I have been able to get the muscle to move by pushing on the esophagus and it feels like it releases, but I am unable to get it to do so for sometime. Is this something that I should get checked? Should I go to an emergency room?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about difficulty in swallowing, feeling that muscle is catching over esophagus, and released by pushing over it, wants to know whether this needs check or ER.
If there is no urgency you can surely go for proper appointment with your Doctor, get referred to an ENT or Gastroenterologist for proper clinical evaluation, examination and management as per the cause is found.
You need the following:
Barium study.
Upper GI Endoscopy.
CT scan of required.
All these get us the most probable diagnosis and have planned treatment as per the findings.
No self treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
