Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat While Having Middle Ear Infection

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2016
Question: A week ago on Wednesday, I went to an Urgent Care with sore throat and ears. I was told I had a bilateral ear infection and prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids. One ear has gone back to being "normal" while the other ear still feels full and continues to hurt. The ear that hurts, feels like it is under pressure. I also continue to have a little bit of a sore throat on the side with the ear pain. The ear/throat pain can be controlled with ibuprofen but the fullness/pressure in the ear is still there and the strange sensation in my throat.

Brief Answer:
Middle ear infection /fluid collection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Your symptoms indicate a middle ear infection/fluid collection. This can be associated with sore throat.
The middle ear is connected to the throat through a small tube called the Eustachaian tube. This is the reason you have the connecting pain between the ear and throat.

I would :
-clinically examine you for Residual throat infections and your ears to check for signs of raised middle ear pressure.

If indicated, I would recommend anti inflammatory drugs and drainage of the fluid to prevent injury, damage and scarring of the ear drum.
This involves using a small puncture in your ear drum to drain the fluid and relieve pressure.

I suggest you see your doctor /ear, nose, throat specialist asap.
In the meantime, use warm saline gargles, anti inflammatory medications to ease pressure and pain.
Avoid blowing your nose too hard and fluids.
Do not insert any objects in your ear.

Hope this helps.
I would be happy to help, should you need any clarification or have any questions.

Wish you good health.

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
