Suggest Treatment For Spinal Stenosis

Question: It has been suggested, based upon my latest MRI, that I may be a candidate to have back surgery for spinal stenosis . However, I have read that it is an option "for people in good health." I've also read that having diabetes and being overweight increase risk factors. Weight I can lose; diabetes ain't goin' anywhere any time soon. Should I continue my research?? One person said definitely a neurosurgeon over an orthopedic surgeon. Is this accurate, or is it just their bad experience?? I'm allergic to NSAIDS and have Steato hepatitis (fatty liver) so I SHOULDN'T be taking acetaminophen.
Brief Answer:
Neurosurgeon/Spinal surgeon.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Wintermute,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist, here to answer your query.
Though, the general rule says that surgery should be done if patient does not respond to adequate medicines and exercises.
However, surgery can be considered in case of severe spinal stenosis and if it is severe enough to make surgery mandatory, then Diabetes is no absolute contraindication.
Besides, a spinal surgeon or neurosurgeon, both can perform the surgery. They may be preferred over ortho surgeon.
Hope that helps. If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.
