Suggest Treatment For Stomach Infection In A Child
Question: My son has had severe diarrhea for 2 weeks (8-20 watery stools a day.) I have taken him to the doctor twice, urgent care, and the hospital. Everyone keeps saying virus. I finally got the doctor to order stool tests for bacteria/viruses/parasites to see if it is the cause. She said that she believes it is toddlers diarrhea. All but one has told me to not give him milk. However, if I give him just water, his stools pass instantly and are nothing but tinted water. If I give him milk, it seems to thicken. However, this afternoon they turned a slimy and are green, but low in volume (about tsp each time vs half a cup or more.) I wont have test results for a few days to a week. I forgot to add that he has no fever, no abdominal pain, has his normal activity level, and normal appetite.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.
After reading your post, it seems that your child may be having infection of the gastrointestinal tract.
You can give him a probiotic. It will be helpful.
Further medical management can be planned according to the reports of the stool investigation.
Give him light meals prepared under hygienic conditions.
Also take care of his hydration.
A clinical examination by his Paediatrician will be helpful.
I hope this is helpful to you.
If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Regards. Thanks.

What would be causing the green, slimy stool now? I am already giving him a probiotic and he has been seen by 4 doctors already.
Brief Answer:
Detailed information is given below.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for providing more information.
During diarrhea, intestinal motility is increased. Due to this increased intestinal motility, bile does not get enough time for its action. Action of bile gives normal brownish color of stool. Hence, his stools are greenish in colour.
The cause of diarrhea should be known. A stool investigation report will help in planning further medical management.
A probiotic will not cure infection.
He may need an antibiotic or an antiamoebic, if the report suggest infection or parasitic infestation.
I hope this answers your query.
If you have any further doubts, please mention.
Thanks.
