Suggest Treatment For Stye On Lower Left Eyelid
Question: I have a small stye on my lower left eyelid and a bit of swelling beneath it. My doctor prescribed a six day dose (6-5-4-3-2-1) of Methylprednisolone 4 mg and a 7 x 2 day of Augmentin 500-125 tablet.
Their office is closed today due to snow. I am just wondering why she didn't start with an antibiotic ointment like erythomycin? Is using a steroid too much for a stye? I've been reading about Methylprednisolone and it seems strong for a small stye. Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Hello and thanks for the query,
Detailed Answer:
I suspect the oral antibiotic was advised due to the fact that with a stye it can be difficult for a topical ointment to penetrate into the area to address the infection.
The oral antibiotic will attack the infection from the inside out so to speak. I suspect your doctor was impressed with some significant swelling or irritation associated with the stye which is why the medrol would be advised.
I would touch base with your doctor again tomorrow when the clinics will be open to advise them how you are doing and see if they would suggest any adjustment to your treatment plan.
Sincerely,
