Suggest Treatment For Subdural Hematoma

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I was diagnosed late Thursday afternoon via an MRI and MRA that I have a subdural hemotoma; my doctor requested a consult with a local neurologist who promptly sent the request to a neurosurgeon -- the scheduling assistant to the neurosurgeon asked why I wasn't in the ER; she called my doctor who again requested the consult appointment and as of this morning I have heard nothing; I assured my doctor that I would take it very easy until I hear something on Monday. My concern is that "is taking it easy and working toward remaining calm" sufficient? Also, my physician says he believes the bleeding is minimal but due to my long history, Fifty four years of coumadin therapy, I may not recognize urgency as promptly as I should; I have had nine (9) PE's since late 1962; I am just short of 70 years old; had fourteen major surgeries in my life; any assistance is appreciated; at this point the weekend feels long

Brief Answer:
If no neurologic deficits you can take it easy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Urgent surgery or not about subdural hematoma depends on its compression degree in adjacent brain, and neurologic deficits.

If you could upload imaging report findings, I could have a better understanding of your condition.

I see you don't have any difficulties comunicating.

If you experience moderate to severe limbs weakness you should be operated.

If no, since you have been treated with coumadin, few days should pass without its use in order to give possibility your body to restore coagulation.

In case of emergency surgery, vitamin K and fresh frozen plasma, restore sooner coagulation abilities.

To conclude, if no neurologic deficits and if no signs of increased intracranial pressure (vomits, lethargy ), you can take it easy.

Surgery is one of the simplest.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.
