Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Numbness In Leg While Having Fibrous Dysplasia
Question: Hi Doctor, I have what appears to me as a raised area on my right tibia which at times aches a little and when I cross my legs that part of my leg goes numb. I first noticed it almost 8 months ago and now it has doubled in size. I met with my general practitioner and she had me have an X-ray. She is referring me to an orthopedic doctor. The X-ray info is as follows: findings consistent with expansile somewhat bubbly cystic lesions involving patients tibia in two separate locations. These appear well corticated without periosteal reaction or pathological fracture. Findings are most consistent with fibrous dysphasia. Bone cyst are in the differential as well as the distal tibia lesion potentially reflecting a benign cortical defect. Cystic malignancy is considered but less likely. Other differentials would include the possibility of brown tumors. The report lists the size of the areas and says it includes the entire tibia. I am waiting for a call from the orthopedic doctor to schedule my appointment. What does all of this mean??? Feeling a little anxious.
Brief Answer:
Surgical removal is needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The swelling and numbness that is gradually increasing can be due to fibrous dysplasia. It is a benign bone growth defect. The surgical biopsy and repair is the best way to treat it. The histopathological report will help in determining the further best treatment.
It is best to consult an orthopedician and get the surgery done.
I hope this answers your query.
