Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Redness In Leg While Having May–Thurner Syndrome
I would explain as follows:
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that the fact angioplasty procedure with stent placement inside the left iliac vein has been performed, means that the deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is the most common complication of MTS has been associated with residual vein stenosis.
Depending on the period passed from DVT (vein thrombosis) occurrence to angioplasty procedure, chronic vein insufficiency (also known as post-thrombotic syndrome) may be present or not.
The fact you have persisting complains (leg swelling and redness, etc.) even after 10 days after the procedure raises strong suspicions about vein insufficiency presence.
Another alternative is a possible stent complication (inefficacy); thrombosis, etc.
Coming to this point, the best strategy to clarify the reason of your persisting complaints, would be a careful medical physical exam and a limb vein ultrasound.
I recommend discussing with your attending doctor on the above mentioned issues.
Meanwhile the recommended anti-thrombotic drugs should be correctly continued as after doctor prescription (INR should be frequently checked).
Hope to have been helpful to you!
In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again!
Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri
Opinion as follows:
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
If vein blood flow has completely returned to normal, then leg swelling/redness if not gone at all, should have started to dissipate already. Usually after a month everything should have returned to normal.
But, the fact they are persisting or even getting worse, means:
- a recurrent DVT or intra-stent thrombosis may have occurred,
- chronic vein insufficiency may have been established
It is necessary to follow a differential diagnostic work up and find the above right cause of your actual clinical symptomatology as the therapeutic strategies for each of them is different.

Dr. Iliri
