Brief Answer:
Injury to internal structures like menisci or ligaments are possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be injury to internal structures of knee like ligaments or menisci. Haematoma or blood clot is possible in this also. There will be some bluish discolouration usually in case of haematoma. If there is no sign like that and tightness is there then it can be synovitis.

An examination with orthopedician is well appreciated to rule out this. We can get clue from physical examination. In case of fluid collection puncture and drainage of fluid will be required. If there is signs of internal damage X ray followed by MRI might be required to confirm it.

You can do ice pack application. Apply ice packs on and off for 15 to 20 minutes . You can repeat this 3 to 4 times a day. You can also immobilize the knee with elastic bandage. Taking over the counter analgesics like ibuprofen ( motrin ) will be helpful for pain relief also.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
