Question: I have had difficulty focusing all my life
I was told recently that as a child
I was the poster child for hyperactivity
And get this kind of humor a lot
I am 55 and extremely frustrated
I get ignored by my doctors constantly when I bring up the subject
I barely made through college at 42 and have working on a masters ever since.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
Dear, I can understand your concerns.

You have had difficulty in focussing throughout your life and also issues of hyperactivity.

I donot understand why your doctors ignore you, but I feel your problem of difficulty in focussing (which you face even now) and hyperactivity are more or less suggestive of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) spectrum.

Your doctors ignore you may be because they are unable to find a solution to your problem.

I have some suggestions for you which will help you to focus and accomplish your work:

1. Create your work schedule a night before. Focus on your top priorities and anticipate any obstacles.

2. Donot be over-optimistic. Under-promise and Over-Deliver. This allows for more success and improved productivity.

3. Cluster certain tasks to specific times of day. This allows your to focus on your key priorities without constant interruptions.

4. Reward Yourself. No matter how small the task is, say to yourself "Good Job" after you have completed it.

5. Write Out the Steps of lengthy tasks. Then, decide what the first steps are. After you have some momentum, you can organize the steps and add any additional items.

6. Define your specific goals for and set a deadline.

I request you to follow these suggestions faithfully and you will see the change.

Along with this, there are certain drugs like methylphenidate (prescription drug) which help in managing such symptoms. A psychiatrist will help you this.

Hope this help you.

Feel free to ask further, if you have more queries.
Will be happy to discuss with you further.

Thanks.

I have attempted many of those things. I end up with a lot of starts and few finishes
In many cases I have wasted tons of time and have accomplished nothing.
If you noticed this message came very early in the morning. I am bothered by the fact that it takes me so long to do one thing for doing many.

Brief Answer:
drug treatment indicated.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow-up query.

As you have tried those things which I mentioned earlier, now in my opinion, you must start the drug treatment.

Drugs like methylphenidate and atomoxetine (prescription drugs) are very effective in such cases.

You should consult a psychiatrist. He would be the best person for you.

Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.
