Question: Recently I have been experiencing heartburn more frequently. Additionally I seem to be experiencing more episodes of diarrhea. The heartburn may last for several hours. The diarrhea may be two or three times per week. I tend to have to make a bowel movement when my stress level starts to climb such as when getting close to an appointment or travel time.

Brief Answer:
Most probably Irritable Bowel syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for writing back. I have gone through your answers. Provisional diagnosis in your case will be Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) secondary to stress induced. IBS is mostly caused by stress & anxiety. There is absolutely no need to worry. As you yourself have observed that your condition aggravates after appointment or travel so you need to overcome this stress. Combine following general & medical measures for improvement:

1. General:
> Stress is in everyone's life but if it overpowers you then it will start causing problem. So try to remain calm and stress free.
> Go out for a walk in the evening. It will reduce stress and will keep you fresh.
> If stress is severe then you can visit a psychologist for "Cognitive behavioral therapy" who will guide you relaxation techniques.

2. Dietary Advise:
> Take high fiber diet (peas, beans, broccoli, etc) including psyllium (ispaghul hask)

> Avoid:
* fatty food & caffeine products
* Spicy food.
* Fruits & salads for the time being.
* Heavy meals at night

3. Medical Advise:
> Gaviscon Suspension has proven good results in heart burn. You can take 1TSF if heartburn occurs.
> Loperamide 2 mg orally incase of diarrhea

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wishing you good health !!
