Question: Hi Doctor,
Since my father cannot lay down in one state , doctor has advice for CT Scan for Staging the cancer. However, I read that there are side effects of CT scan.
Initially, doctor advised for MRI which looks okay but is costly. Please suggest me which one should I opt for my father so that his health should not be affected. May be I need to convince him if required.
Your help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
abdominal and pelvic CT scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your reports attached.

Your fathers PSA is high and he is most probably suffering from prostate cancer.

For staging of the disease I would advise you to do a abdominal and pelvic CT scan, x ray of chest, bone scan, liver function test and acid phosphatase measurement.

CT scan is safe and there is nothing to worry.

Brief Answer:
Apollo hospitals XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi

You can undergo treatment for your father in Apollo hospitals XXXXXXX

If detected in early stage like 1, 2 and 3 it can be treated successfully.

If detected in stage 4 then palliative chemotherapy is the only option.

10 year survival rate for stage 1 to 3 prostate cancer is 99 %.

5 year survival rate for stage 4 prostate cancer is only 28%.

6 months of treatment is required for successful treatment if detected in early stage.

Hi XXXX,

Thank you providing details. I was reading about prostate cancer on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostate_cancer where I read about "Risk factors".
What are the preventive actions which one should do to avoid this cancer. How frequent it happens to immediate family member ?

Most importantly, my father has a habit of having tobacco since young age. He still consumes it. After diagnosis, we asked him to stop it. What do you suggest for him.
It is very hard for him since past few days as he is complaing about constipation, gas, etc.

Thanks,
XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Eat wide variety of vegetables and fruits

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Prostate cancer can be prevented by eating at least 2½ cups of a wide variety of vegetables and fruits each day, being physically active and staying at a healthy weight.

It does not generally happen to its immediate family member and risk is only about 10 %.

Tobacco consumption should be stopped immediately as it is one of the risk factors of prostate cancer.

For gas he can take syrup digene 2 tsf after meals twice daily and for constipation he can take syrup duphalac 15 ml at night after food.
