Posted on Fri, 3 Jun 2016
Question: I have a question concerning sudden ringing and slight hearing loss in my left ear. It started, seemingly out of nowhere, about two hours ago and has not gone away.
I have not had a cold or any sort of ear infection recently nor have I got any water in my ears. I'm a 20 year old male.

Brief Answer:
Tinnitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Since its the first episode of ringing and slight hearing loss with no previous history of such events and there is also no prior infection that you have experienced then the likely causes are

Exposure to loud noise plus people who smoke both are at higher risk of developing Tinnitis.
Temporomandibular joint disorder
Earwax blockage and hardening
otosclerosis or stiffening of bones in middle ear

High blood pressure can also cause Tinnitis and should be checked first. Medication / drug history is important as many meds like aspirin diuretics antibiotics and certain antidepressants can cause and worsen Tinnitis.

Treatment would depend upon the cause. Request your GP to examine you on these lines. If any cause is found it should be treated. Specialist referral to an ENT doctor can be done if deemed necessary by your GP.

WISHING you best of health
