Suggest Treatment For Torn ACL And Meniscus

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: Hello I am a 32yr old female and when I was 24 I completely tore my ACL and Meniscus. It took about 9months but I had surgery and chose to use a hamstring graph for repair. an absorb-able screw was put in and I was pretty good for about 3yrs. Later I began to get lower leg swelling and had a second surgery performed to remove a large cyst that formed below the scar tissue in my calf. I am beginning to get lower leg swelling (Not frequent but painful) and foot swelling. I am considering getting either a compression lower leg sleeve or a compression leg sleeve to aid in circulation and help reduce swelling, but I am not sure.

Brief Answer:
You can wear stockings

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. I think your calf is not completely recovered from this surgery and so still you are having pain and swelling. If you want then there are stockings available at medical store which you can use for this purpose.
As far as your pain is concerned I want to know few more things .
1.Are you having any pain in knee also?
2.Is their any issue with scar?
3.Did you get any MRI of the calf or ankle as it can be a different problem also?
Please send me answers of these questions.I will try my best to help you.
thanks

Thank you so much.

1. To be honest no not really I feel slight instability at times but its weird because now that the calf is isolated I am not experiencing Knee pain and for come reason the knee feels more stable.
@. I honestly believe so. When I got my 2nd surgery initially the doctor saw nothing so he wanted to scope it then he said that he found a 3" cyst which was removed. There is a small dent at the scar site and I don't know if a bone was nicked or if he had to remove some of the muscle but the pain radiates from the scar down the bone to my foot and then at times up to my quad.
3. No I have not. (This is conditional....)
Quick background:
I played basketball from the age of 4 to 24 when the injury occur ed so I have had several ankle sprains and shin splint the norm but no major issues and this was before the knee injury

Brief Answer:
You need to get MRI of the calf

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I have studied your case. If this pain is isolated in the calf with knee is stable then it can be a calf muscle injury. It can be related to your frequently injured ankle also. So I would suggest you to get MRI of the ankle to check if there is any thing torn or pulled in the calf. There can be muscle tear or a ligament injury that can cause such symptoms.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. let me know if there is any other followup questions. thanks
