Suggest Treatment For Upper Respiratory Infection
Question: My wife was seen at a local urgent care clinic about 2 weeks ago for an upper respiratory infection. She was given two shots in the hip area. One was decadron and the other was rochepin. She has had those type injections in the past with no problems. However, this time she developed intense pain in the injection area about 7 days later. The pain seems to go and come. There is no redness or swelling of the skin over the area. The pain seems to be worse when she is lying down or standing for an extended period of time. OTC pain meds give very little relief. She is reluctant to return to that clinic. The pain has begun to subside somewhat over the past couple of days. We have put in a call to our family physician, but they advised that she return to the urgent care clinic. Should she seek care elsewhere? She is hoping that in a few more days that is will resolve on its own. Thanks in advance for your guidance.

The injections given include an antibiotic and a steroid.
Among these,the antibiotic injection(rochepin/ceftriaxone) can sometimes cause significant pain at the injection site,especially when given intramuscular.
As she has no fever/skin redness/swelling,injection site infection as the cause of pain is unlikely.
And,since the pain is coming down for last couple of days,there is nothing wrong in waiting for spontaneous resolution.You can advise local ice pack application.If needed,also use simple analgesics like Acetaminophen 500mg or ibuprofen 400mg thrice daily after food for 3 days(if she is not allergic).
If the pain fails to resolve in 3 days or increases,avoid further delay in seeking medical attention.
