default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: I am experiencing a lot of yellow and sometimes brownish watery discharge from my nose after a light cold. It is not smelly but is slightly sticky and is particularly bad when I have my head down forward. No head injury.

Brief Answer:
It is upper respiratory tract infection involving Sinuses and needs care !!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting and your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician.
I have completely reviewed your health query, and well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

I feel really sorry for this awful situation you have to face due to the sinus infection. It is actually a bacterial infection and you need proper care and management.

Home remedies and self care:
Take a plenty of clean drinking water for revitalization of your systems.
Keep a balanced and healthy diet.
You need proper rest for a faster recovery.
Keep a warm mist vaporizer in your room to soothe your respiration and to keep the respiratory mucosal lining moistened. It will also help you get better fast if you add up VICKS PADS in the Vaporizer.
Take lukewarm saline water and do nasal douches and gargles with it many times a day for better outcome.

Medication guide: (Note: before the start of any medication call your Primary care Physician and if needed, you may need a prescription for some drugs).

If I was your treating Physician I would have prescribed you with AZITHROMYCIN once daily dose if not allergic to and off course a follow up after a week or so.
ACETAMINOPHEN; and PSEUDOEPHEDRINE after meals twice daily to reduce body aches and inflammation.
FEXOFENADINE after dinner.
SALINE NASAL SPRAY to apply in both the nostrils.

If you feel that nothing is working anymore for you, it will be the time to consult for in-person evaluation by an Otorhinolaryngologist for better management. There may be some anatomical defect like deflected nasal septum, Nasal polyps etc that need Surgical managements.

Hope I answered all of your queries. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you. For any disease you have, a timely follow-up is necessary regarding the treatment efficacy and to see if there is a need to change the treatment options. So keep a follow up to see how you doing (Always write down my name in start of your questions at this forum & I will be with you in no time).

Thank you for your answer. I have on hand a prescription (dated August 2015) for amoxicillin 500mg which I didn't use. That was given to me in case my bronchitis didn't clear up quickly (which it did). Also one for flucloxacillin 500mg which I didn't use earlier this year. Can either of these do the job?
I haven't had any antibiotics for several years.
