Suggest Treatment For Urinary Tract Infection
Question: Hello, I went in my pool last night right before bed, & the water was colder than usual. When I got out & went to bed, I was shivering & couldn't stop, which has never happened to me before. I woke up a few hours later, cold & shaking like a leaf, teeth chattering, & I had discomfort in my abdomen, felt like I had to go to the bathroom (but when I tried, I couldn't go). Now, this morning, I still feel a hint of the shivers. (Also, I have not been eating much food the past few days - more coffee than food.) Could this shaking & cold be anything dangerous or that needs treatment, or can I ignore it? Thank you!
Brief Answer:
Hi welcome to HCM. Seems to me like a urinary tract infection.
Detailed Answer:
Hi welcome to HCM. Seems to me like a urinary tract infection. The cold and extra coffee have precipitated an attack by causing dehydration as you have correctly deduced. Please drink lemon barley water/ cranberry juice, four times a day and get your urine examined for infection. You can take paracetamol/Tylenol for fever. In case there is an infection, it will have to be treated. If the urine test is normal, continue with lemon barley/cranberry juice for a week. It might clear up a mild infection. Regards

Hi Dr XXXXXXX thank you for the prompt response.
A urinary tract infection?!? From getting in a cold pool? Please forgive me for asking this, but, are you sure? Why would the cold cause a uti?
Also, I am nervous, bec my husband is too cheap to have a professional company clean the pool; he just has one of his maintenance workers dump chemicals in there randomly. The water looks clean, but who knows. Many times in past, it has been all sorts of colors. (Not recently.). (But last night, I didn't even actually swim; I just actually walked back & forth in pool for about 5 mins.) so I def did not swallow any water.
*I was reading about chills after swimming & it said typhoid?!? I am scared of this too. ?????
:(
Thank you, XXXXXXX

Also, when I said I felt like I had to go to the bathroom, but then when I got in the bathroom, I didn't have to go, I meant poop, not pee.
Brief Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I don't mind your asking for clarification.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I don't mind your asking for clarification. I did not mean you got the infection from the pool. I meant if you have some bacteria in your bladder (which all of us can have), it can flare up if there is dehydration---due to the cold and the coffee. Because of dehydration, there is less flushing out of urine, which allows the bacteria to multiply. And shivering is commonly a sign of urinary infection. That is why I suggested a urine examination. Yes you can get typhoid or jaundice by swimming in a pool (not walking in it). But Typhoid will not develop so fast. It takes about 2 weeks incubation period before the infection manifests. Hope it is clearer now. You can revert back. Regards

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX
Thank you so much for your response; I really appreciate it.
Is it def a Urinary Tract infection, even tho I don't have to pee frequently, no urgency, no feeling of having to go but really don't, etc? (Like I said, I did in the middle of the night feel like I had to go to the bathroom #2 but didn't really have to - but now my stomach feels fine.)
Is it possible that the shivering & abdominal discomfort last night & when I first woke up (I feel fine now!) is actually nothing - just a reaction from the cold temperature, not signifying any actual illness?
