Question: Hi Doctor, I had reconstructive shoulder surgery (Latarjet and biceps tendonesis) four weeks ago Weds. (5/18). For 16 days I was taking 2X 10mg oxycontin and up to four 5mg fast acting oxycontin to control pain. After 16 days I ran out of the 10mg pills, but continued to take 3 half 5mg pills so 7.5mg oxycodin a day for a further 7 days. After 48 hours or so without the pills I felt like I was having a heart attack and panic attack at the same time. I felt like I was going to die. I went to the ER and got blood tests and scans and everything was clear, nothing worrisome. I was diagnosed as having opiod withdrawals. I called my surgeon and he thought it also sounded like withdrawals. I also went to my GP and he couldn't find anything out of the ordinary and said opiod withdrawals too. It just seems like 20 some days of use is not that long and I have been off the opiods for 7 days now, but I continue to have these horrible anxiety/panic attack type symptoms. I would think they would have abated by now. I am a healthy 39 year old male with no history other than orthopedic injuries, I eat fairly healthy and prior to surgery I did lost of exercise. I have no previous experience with opiods. My question Is it possible to be so sensitive to opiods and have such horrible symptoms for a week after taking them for only 23 days?
