Suggest Treatment For Wounds Like Paper Cuts On Hands
Question: Hi Doctor:
The other day I helped someone move and attempted to clean a rusty wash machine. It was so rusty with black metal pieces coming off of it. Took me a long time but I got it clean. I should have used gloves but could not find any at the time I did use rolls of paper towels. I thoroughly washed my hands with soap and water when finished. When I got home I saw small paper like cuts on my index finger on my right hand. No deep cuts. I must have cut them while cleaning. I have been having pain in my hand especially in the palm and wrist and fingers. Could these cuts have been exposed to tetanus or maybe the pain is related to strain because I cleaned for quite a long time. Please advise . Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Most likely related to strain!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.
I have reviewed your symptoms and the surrounding circumstances fully. This is not suggestive of tetanus. The cause of these symptoms is strain. I will recommend that you take Tylenol and get some rest. All would be okay. Though this is not tetanus at this time, endeavor to use protective measures in future when face with a similar task.
I wish you well and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Hi again Dr.:
Thank you so much for your quick response. I will be cautious in the future. For my own information, tetanus usually occurs in deep punctured wounds correct and usually through nails?

Brief Answer:
That's true!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Tetanus occurs through deep punctured wounds and mostly with nails. You are correct on that and thanks for promising to be extra cautious in future.
Prevention is clearly better than cure.
