Suggest Treatment For Yeast Infection And Swollen Perineum Area

Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Hello, I've had a situation that I've seen a weekend clinic for that was diagnosed as a yeast infection and was prescribed diflucan.

I've started to notice a bit of yellow splotchiness (best description I can come up with) on my perineum, that is also very swolen.

The internet only seems to cause more fear.

Need more details please.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I need a few details here before I can guide you further.
What is your age ?
Are you male or female ?
How long have you taken diflucan ?
What symptoms did you have at that time ?
And last, you need to upload photos of the splotchiness, so that I can opine about what it is likely to be.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care.

Hello, I'm 38, female and only taken it for a little over 24 hrs. At the time of my visit my syptoms were the same, except i hadnt noticed the yellow spots as much. The sx were fairly severe burning and swelling of the perineum to where ive not had a restful night since this past wednesday. Ive attached 2 photos. I also had a dull headache but it could be allergy/weather related.

I appreciate your input.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of a yeast infection.

Detailed Answer:
This is suggestive of a yeast infection.
The whitish yellowish patches often happen in a bad yeast ( fungal infection ).
Did they take a vaginal swab and culture ?
If not, please get that done too, just to confirm the diagnosis, and rule out other possibilities.
And continue the Diflucan.
Apply a local clotrimazole containing Ointment OTC ( canesten ) .
Avoid touching the area.
Best to refrain from sex until you get better.
Just wash with lukewarm water, avoid using any special gels, creams, soap or douches.
Have you had such an infection earlier ?
Did you use antibiotics recently for any indication ?
Take care.

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX

I'll continue with the topical, I was concerened it was making things worse. Do you think epsom salt baths help was well

I've had yeast infections in my youth but really hadnt had one of convern since I was a child. I have not been on any antibiotics but I habe changed my laundry detergent as well as used a new brand of condom with my partner. I threw out both today!

Thank you again, you hopefully will allow me a restful (stress free) sleep this evening. ?

Detailed Answer:
Just continue, and let me know if it improves by tomorrow, it should.
Do not use any bath salts right now.
Maybe the new stuff triggered it.
I hope you sleep well tonight, will be glad if you do so.
Keep me posted anyhow.
Take care.

Detailed Answer:
I am so sorry to know you are still in so much of pain.
Yes, take the dosage of Diflucan.
But I would still have insisted on a culture, because some strains are particularly virulent and difficult to treat.
It might need oral therapy or prolonged treatment.
Please get that done.
You can try the epsom salt sitz bath too.
Keep me posted.
