Suggest Treatment To Avoid Choking On Own Saliva In A Heart Patient

In May 2011 he had a brain stem stroke, right side, and left side.
Doctors here indicated they can do little for him. He is presently havining problems with his vision.
I am presently thickening his drinks with Thick-it whis is purchased in U.S.A.
Is there any side effects from using this product
Best to change lifestyle,Thickit is not harmful
Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.
Thabk you for writing to us.
Unfortunately, due to the stroke and the damage it has caused, only a CT or MRI angiogram can assess his current status and how exactly we can help him to avoid choking on his own saliva.
Sadly, if his doctor has said that there is little we can do for him, I am afraid he has suffered some serious damage. But I would either way encourage a second opinion just to make sure we are giving him the best possible in terms of treatment and care.
As for Thick-it, it should really help for the dysphagia your husband is facing, but it also contains a lot of digesrible carbohydrates. Please make sure you run this through your husband dietitian or doctor to make sure he is on a safe diet, as diet is of prime importance in a patient who has suffered a previois stroke.
Other home made options include purees, stews, pies, etc. You should consult a dietitian if you have not already to help select the best Thickit and a safe diet for your husband.
I hope you find my response helpful. Please write back to me if you have any further clarifications or if I have failed to explain anything. I would be more than happy to be of assistance.
Best wishes.
