Suggest Treatment When Diagnosed With Spinal Stenosis
Question: can someone with a command of the English language please explain to me in layman's language exactly what spinal stenosis is, its causes, potential treatments, and likely prognoses are for me. thxxxxx
Brief Answer:
Narrowing and/or spinal cord stenosis by different causes.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
Spinal stenosis means narrowing of spinal canal and/or compression of spinal cord by different causes such massive herniated disc disease, spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebrae), spinal masses etc.
Mild cases are treated first conservatively with NSAID drugs for pain, physical therapy, epidural injections.
Moderate to severe cases with significant neurological compromise are candidates for surgical decompression+/- spinal fusion, depending on cause.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

thxxx for your reply! very good answer. could spinal stenosis be caused by a fall, falls, or cigarette smoking? could it be related to my reent hip problems and barely being able to walk could it be related to the fact that I have had arthritis in my right knee for the past 25 years untreated?? thxxxxxxxxx
Brief Answer:
Fall may cause/contribute to stenosis.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.
Fall may cause vertebral column instability, fracture that contribute to stenosis.
Arthritis, cigarette smoking may affect vertebral column in terms of degenerative changes and hypertrophy contributing this way to stenosis.
Hip and knee problems are not related to stenosis, but spinal stenosis may result in leg pain, numbness.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
