Suggest Ways To Rule Out Scoliosis

Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: How can i know if i had scoliosis as a child and it stopped progressing when i reached spinal maturity or if my scoliois is degenerative and is bound to progress.

I know the best way would be a follow up xray after some time .. I am 36 yr old active male with no symptoms . No previous xrays

Brief Answer:
I am afraid to say but there is no investigation to tell this now.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX velogarde,
Thanks for being on HCM again.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist, again here to answer your query.

Referring to our extensive discussion about your case history,I can well understand your mental storms but I am sorry to say that at this point of time, there is no investigation which can really tell what was your spine in the past.I hope you can understand the simple logic.

And,well said,follow-up X-rays will guide you through your diagnosis. So,I suggest you to have faith in God and be patient.

If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Thank you for your patience doctor and understanding my anxiety .. Just another question would mild stenosis be present in idiopathic non treated child scoliosis .. Or the fact that mild stenosis is present rules out childhood scoliosis that stopped at skeletal maturity .. Thanks so much for your patience with me and my many questions :)

Brief Answer:
Are you talking about spinal canal stenosis?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX velogarde,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Though,we had an extensive discussion over it as well,I want to know that -when you refer to stenosis,is it spinal canal stenosis you are talking about?-because in reference to spine,we can talk about spinal stenosis or foraminal stenosis.Though,it is hard to comment upon foraminal stenosis on basis of X-ray.So,I presume it is spinal canal stenosis.

The causes of spinal stenosis can be-
1)Age related degeneration(osteophytes suggest that it may have started in you)-MRI is better investigation to comment upon it.
2)Hereditary/Congenital
3)Trauma

So,you see-mild stenosis can be present in both the conditions and does not rule out or rule in, any of them.

Hoping that it is of some help to you,If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to answer them.

Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,
