Question: My mom had a heartvalve replacement through her leg on March 28th. The procedure went very well, but they also discovered that her main artery was clogged and so they decided to put in a stent. However, her bloodpressure completely dropped, CPR was given and heart-lung machine was connected. It was explained that she was without any oxygen for awhile. She hasn't woken up yet, doesn't response to pain stimuli, but does open her eyes when we talk to her. Scan doesn't shown any brain damage, and a stroke was ruled out. Your insight is appreciated...

Brief Answer: transient ischemia Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for your query. Even for seconds stoppage of circulation or oxygenation could be lead to brain damage, most often reversible. The effect of a brief period of anoxia has to be observed clinically, as minor damage may not be visualized in scans. The Glassgow Coma scale (GCS) is one such clinical assessment, the better the score gets better is the recovery. I would recommend her stay continue in the hospital till the GCS is within normal limits. A regular follow up would also be necessary to make sure that the recovery is permanent.
