What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Non-penetrative Sexual Activity?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Question: I am freaking out. I had a brief sexual encounter yesterday. I am female and I have had an affair with a guy back about 6 months ago. I totally freaked out hiv and tested negative. I slipped up yesterday and put his penis in my mouth for all of 20/seconds. There was no ejaculation and I am pretty sure there was no pre cum because I had felt and saw his penis before. I quickly stopped. I am freaking out of the chance I could get hiv from this encounter.

Brief Answer:
No risk for HIV

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You have a lapse yesterday and had a very brief sexual encounter. This encounter was minimal and there is no chance for you to contract HIV by this type of encounter. I can completely reassure you that you need a sexual contact that involves more contact than what you experienced to contract HIV or any other STD. You can relax your not going to be infected after this.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

I am having severe anxiety again. Now I am worried about the hiv test I took about the accuracy of it. I took the home hiv test OraQuick. It was 5 months since any sexual encounter and I followed the directions exactly. The result was negative. How accurate is this?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ronald Schubert (14 hours later)
Brief Answer:
No need to be anxious

Detailed Answer:
The home screening tests for HIV are accurate enough to screen for 99 percent of HIV patients. There is virtually no chance you could get a false positive test. I can reassure you that you do not have HIV.

I feel ok about the test now but I am having anxiety again over the other exposure. I have had a runny nose and drainage for a few days and maybe a slight fever like 99 and I am freaking out thing now I have symptoms of hiv. When my anxiety gets like this my heart rate is 90 to 110 and I don't know if this is the anxiety because I do get this way then I have it really bad or if it hiv.

Anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Your anxiety is getting in the way of your ability to make decisions and think about the world. I recommend that you read and study the book "The Anxiety and Phobia Handbook" by a Dr. Bourne. Use the techniques in the book and hopefully you will be able to reduce your overall anxiety

So you are saying that it is the anxiety that is causing me so many problems and your answer earlier about my brief encounter is still accurate?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ronald Schubert (8 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
yes to my previous answer

Detailed Answer:
Yes you have little or no concerns about contracting HIV. Your tests being negative confirm that you do not have HIV. And yes your anxieties are causing you to feel scared and worried all the time and making you believe you may have HIV. I just recommend that to help with your overall anxiety issues that you try the handbook and see if it helps you cope better with stresses in life. Everyone can use help with better coping skills.

I will. My mind just will not shut off about it. I get so consumed with fear and anxiety that it is hard for me to function most of the time. Even though I know there isn't much if any change I got it from the 20 second encounter. I have struggled with anxiety my whole life but the last year has been really bad.

Thank you. I will. It seems to be helping some at least it is helping me understand why I am feeling this way and that I am not crazy. The last few days have been better but I do catch myself worrying about the risk of the last exposure. I am trying to focus on the logical not with so much emotion.

Thank for you guidance and help. It is been very helpful having someone to talk to and ask questions to.
I guess I spoke too soon. I am having major anxiety tonight about that stupid event that happened two weeks ago. I keep playing it over in my mind and have convinced myself that I probably got hiv this time. I have been online looking at everything. I even looked to see how long hiv would live on the penis from precum because it was on there about 5 to 10 mins before anything happened. It is like I get started and go down the path until it is complete and utter hell. Why can't I except that the chance is very small if any?

Brief Answer:
You have what we call distorted thinking

Detailed Answer:
You have been not thinking clearly and it is called distorted thinking. If you start using the anxiety and phobia handbook you will learn to recognize these distorted thoughts and stop them before they take over your thinking and life. I urge again that you start working with the handbook and possibly finding a therapist that can also work with you on these matters

Is this something that you always have and manifest over time? I have always had tendancies to be like this but it has gotten worse in the last year and now I am here. Will this always be a battle I will have to fight?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ronald Schubert (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Nature vs nurture

Detailed Answer:
What you are asking is the "is this Nature vs. nurture" question. The answer is both. We all have things we have to work on and yours maybe working on your anxieties. It is good to know how things happened but what is more important is how do you proceed from here. Looking back is not always the best policy. Work on your anxiety everyday and eventually your anxiety will become less prominent. Only you can change you. Take the time to read and work on the principles in the Anxiety handbook and you will gradually reduce your overall anxiety.
